F-1s are a new design and concept which force you to hold the pick in the 'proper' manner, as explained by several guitar instructors and GIT
alumni. The pick is a bit odd looking, almost taco-shaped with one
side curved - a bit like melted plastic. The idea, as not always
best explained yet on the info site, is to hold the pick at the tip
of the finger, along the side, with the curved part just over the
edge and just at the fingernail. The thumb goes along the top, as in
a natural relaxed hand placement. The basis of it is that your hand ends up staying relaxed, not having a "death grip" on the pick, and you can play longer and more freely. Currently on the market are Medium, .75, and Heavy, 1.00, gauges. Soon to come will be lighter gauges and metal picks as well. In the July Guitar Center buyer's guide will be an offer for a free pair of F-1 picks (one Med., one Heavy) with purchase of one set of Ernie Ball strings (most styles). When I first got the picks to try, I wasn't exactly sure of the proper usage intended. That would be about the worst complaint was the functional placement description. After trying it a few times and checking with the company, I finally got it. For my own personal feel, having been a player for over 20 years and grown accustomed to a certain style, these picks do show an obvious benefit but are still a bit odd for me to use. For others who are in need of more proper "disciplined" pick holding style, or who lose their picks all the time, this may be a godsend. All in all it's a good idea and one that is still ever evolving. Definitely worth a try. For more information: www.f1pick.com.
