IRWINDALE RACEWAY prior to my best race.
Glenn Purbaugh, Pit Man and the prescient Pete Smiley, Owner/Builder.
In the Main Event are seven times National Champion Mike Bast, the soon to be National and two times World Champion Bruce Penhall, third in the nation Steve Nutter and me.
Pete's bike had a stiff frame that didn't work on the normal racing surface but was good in the deep cushion that developed thru the night, out by the crash wall.
I'm with Bast out of the gate, but when he starts to the pole I go straight and jump a little berm into the unused, deep cushion. Bast, seeing what I've done, changes his line and does a big blocking slide job on me to take the lead in the middle of the turn. I, being in the deep stuff, am able to make a sharp left underneath him to take the lead coming out of the turn! These maneuvers are repeated in every turn for the rest of the race. Eight lead changes in four laps makes this arguably the best Speedway race ever.
At the payoff booth Mike grabbed me by the arm and said, "Nice race". He hated to loose and hardly ever did !!!
